UX Case Study
Reducing User Drop-Off in an AI Copywriting SaaS Onboarding Flow
Project Overview
In 2025, AI writing tools are everywhere. The problem isn’t awareness — it’s retention.
Our AI copywriting SaaS platform was generating strong signups from paid ads, but only 32% of new users completed onboarding, and just 18% generated a second piece of content within 7 days.
The goal:
Increase onboarding completion and improve early activation without adding complexity.
My Role
UX Research + UX Strategy + Microcopy Optimization
- Conducted usability tests (remote, moderated)
- Analyzed heatmaps & session recordings
- Redesigned onboarding flow
- Rewrote microcopy for clarity and momentum
- Collaborated with Product and Engineering
The Problem
- New users were overwhelmed.
- Common friction points:
- Too many AI tool options on first login
- Generic onboarding prompts
- No visible “quick win” moment
- Weak progress indicators
- Users didn’t understand what made the product different
Behavioral data showed:
- 48% abandoned at the “Select a Template” page
- 37% paused >90 seconds before input
- Most users experimented randomly without guidance
The experience was powerful — but not directional.
Research Insights
User interviews revealed three patterns:
1. Users Want Immediate Output
They signed up because they saw an ad promising “Instant Ad Copy.”
Instead, they got choice paralysis.
2. Confidence Was Low
Many users didn’t trust the AI yet. They weren’t sure what to type into prompts.
3. Users Wanted Guardrails
Users preferred structured input over open-ended text fields.
One quote:
“Just tell me what to fill in so I don’t mess it up.”
Hypothesis
If we reduce cognitive load and guide users to a fast win within 3 minutes, activation will increase.
Strategy
We redesigned onboarding around Momentum UX — a framework focused on fast reward loops.
Key Changes
1. Replaced Template Library with Guided First Task
Instead of 50+ tools on entry, users saw one question:
“What are you promoting today?”
This triggered a simplified 3-step guided flow.
2. Introduced a Progress Indicator
A clear 3-step progress bar reduced anxiety and improved perceived simplicity.
3. Added Example Inputs (Microcopy Fix)
Instead of blank fields, we used contextual examples:
Before: “Enter product description”
After: “Ex: Online course that helps freelancers land $5K clients.”
Completion rate increased immediately in testing.
4. Engineered a Quick Win
We guaranteed output in under 60 seconds.
After generating copy, users saw:
